I’m super excited today to welcome back Laura Griffin to my site. If you’re a long time reader, you know that Laura is one of my few auto buy authors. I’ve read every one of her books and love seeing the wonderful success she’s enjoying in her writing career. She’s celebrating the release of the 5th Tracers novel TWISTED, which came out last week. If you haven’t picked up a copy, it is so worth your while. So without further ado, here’s Laura!
Hi Jess! Thanks for inviting me back today. You know I love your blog.
TWISTED is the fifth book in your Tracers series. So, what’s it like writing a series that is essentially not a series? I love how your books can be read stand alone but still have same setting. Why did you decide to write the books this way?
The series is made up of stand-alone stories for the simple reason that I’ve always been a big fan of libraries. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been totally engrossed in a series and gone to the library to check out the next installment only to discover the book was checked out. Bitter disappointment!
So when I began planning the series, I wanted readers to be able to pick up a book anywhere in the lineup and be able to follow the story. Each book has a stand-alone mystery plot. Each book focuses on a different romantic couple. Each book has its own Happily Ever After. You can read them in any order.
Still, though, the characters and settings overlap from book to book. Every novel has a cast of Tracers characters.
And for those who don’t know, what are the Tracers?
Another question I get all the time!
The Tracers are an elite group of forensic experts who help homicide cops and cold case detectives solve their toughest cases. The Tracers work at the (fictional) Delphi Center crime lab in central Texas.
Is this based on a real place?
Part of the inspiration for the Delphi crime lab came when I read about a new “body farm” they were building here in central Texas. A body farm is a place where people study decomposition and skeletal remains.
I had decided to write a series that featured a cutting-edge crime lab, and I thought it would be cool if this lab was sitting atop a body farm, so I could introduce some bones experts into my stories. The main bones expert in the series is Kelsey Quinn, a forensic anthropologist who helps Detective Allison Doyle and FBI profiler Mark Wolfe solve the mystery in TWISTED. Kelsey has her own full-length story coming in the fall.
And what is TWISTED about?
This is the story of Allison Doyle, a rookie detective who is knee-deep in her first big case when she meets FBI profiler Mark Wolfe. The cops in Allison’s department are investigating a brutal murder, and think they have the case nailed. Mark comes to town to convince them that they have their case all wrong, and that the real murderer is a serial killer Mark has been hunting for years.
